Windows Troubleshooting

Read To Succeed Series

Networking Problems

  • Rights Issues - The installer can not create rights for files in the installation folder.

Solution = Rights or Permissions on a file server differ, and need to be set by the Network Administrator after the installation completes. Windows Servers need Read, Write, Read & Execute and Modify permissions. Novell servers need Read, Write, Create and Execute permissions.

Assessment Series

Printing Problems

  • HP LJ1200 - Printing answers report to LaserJet 1200 causes PCL XL error

Solution = This error only occurs when printing in PCL6 mode. Install the PostScript driver for LJ1200 and print to the newly installed PostScript(PS) mode printer.

Basic Skills Series

Installation Problems

  • License Number - The installer, or program will not accept your license number.

Solution = When typing your license number, make sure you are typing the number zero for the character 0, and not the letter o. Also, be sure to type the dashes.

  • New errors in other Essential Skills programs - After installing the program, you note that another Essential Skills program will not run properly, or that it seems to have errors.

Solution = Download and install the General Update for version 3.20 or below. For version 4.00 and above got General Update SE

Common PC Problems

  • Unable to run the program on a Pentium 4 computer - Running the program gives a General Protection Fault.

Solution = Download and install the Pentium 4 Update.

  • Low Quality, grainy graphics - Program graphic image colors do not blend smoothly, or appear out of focus.

Solution = Your computer monitor is not displaying enough colors. It is recommended that you set the monitor to display at least High Color. To access the color settings, open the Display dialogue from the Control Panel. Then, click on the Settings tab at the top of the window. Select High Color, or True Color from the Color list box.

  • Some activities don't work - When trying to run certain activities, the screen flashes and nothing happens.

Solution = Make sure you click on the menu item once only. It is not necessary to double- click any buttons or labels in the program.

  • Program locks when no-one is using it - Program locks up, or crashes after several minutes left unattended.

Solution = Some screen savers, or power management schemes can cause problems with our software. Ask your site administrator to disable the screen saver or power management.

  • No sound, or poor quality sound - The sound in the program does not play, or is faint.

Solution = The audio compression (codecs) for Windows may not be properly installed. To install the audio compression, open the Add/Remove Programs dialogue from the Control Panel. Then, click on the Windows Setup tab at the top of the window. From the components list, double-click on Multimedia. In the new window that appears, ensure that there is a check beside Audio Compression. If there is not, add one and re-boot the computer. If there is a check, clear it, and re-boot the computer. Then, check Audio Compression, and re-boot the computer again.

  • The Taskbar is covering part of the program - The Windows Taskbar is obscuring the bottom of the program screen.

Solution = The Taskbar should be set either to Auto hide, or set not to show on top of other programs. Right-click on the Taskbar, and select Properties from the menu. Make sure that Auto hide is checked, or that the Always on top box is not checked.
