Installation Problems

• License Number - The installer, or program will not accept your license number.
  
  Solution = When typing your license number, make sure you are typing the number 0 for the character 0, and not the letter o. Be sure to type the dashes.
  

• QuickTime tries to connect to the Internet - When installing QuickTime, the computer wants an Internet connection, or tries to download information from the Internet.
  
  Solution = Within the QuickTime Install folder, make sure you are running QuickTime Installer, and not QuickTime Install Cache.
  

• Error "System Error 2" - The system reports "Error - 2"
  
  Solution = The Macintosh Runtime for Java is not correctly installed.
  Reinstall the MRJ from the CD.
  To reinstall the MRJ:

  § Insert your Program CD and open the folder called Java Install

  § Run the program called Install and follow the on screen instructions.

• New errors in other Essential Skills programs - After installing this program, you note that another Essential Skills program will not run properly, or that it seems to have new errors.
  
  Solution = Download and install the General Update for version 3.20 or below. For version 4.00 and above got General Update SE
  

Common Macintosh Problems

• Loading problem - The program will not load, or the program does load but crashes later.
  
  Solution = It is possible that your computer has an outdated version of the Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ) installed. This program requires at least version 2.1 of the MRJ.
  To install the MRJ:

  § Insert your Program CD and open the folder called Java Install

  § Run the program called Install and follow the on screen instructions.

• Loading problem - The menu bar at the top of the screen changes, but nothing else happens.
  
  Solution = If you have a Lab Pack license then you need to delete the file that ends with “.LTR”. This file can be found in the program’s main folder. The main folder is the one in which your program is installed. By default, it is named Essential Skills. The next time you run the program you will have to enter the license number again.
  

• Low quality, grainy graphics - Program graphic image colors do not blend smoothly, or appear out of focus.
  
  Solution = Your computer monitor is not displaying enough colors. It is recommended that you set the monitor to display at least Thousands of Colors. To access the color settings, open the Monitors and Sound control panel.
  

• Some activities don’t work - When trying to run certain activities, the screen flashes and nothing happens.
  
  Solution = Make sure you click on the menu item once only. It is not necessary to double- click any buttons or labels in the program.
  

• No sound, or poor quality sound - The sound in the program does not play, or is faint.
  
  Solution = Install QuickTime from the Essential Skills CD.
